MONTOGMERY, Ala. – The Southern University Lady Jaguars (1-17, 1-5) looked to finish the SWAC cluster on a high note against Alabama State University (9-13, 6-1) Monday afternoon. The Hornets would take the match 3-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1
- Southern would take an early lead with kills by Akilah Smith and Kailee Deffebaugh, 2-0.
- ASU would come back and to tie the set at three apiece before taking a 6-3 lead.
- Southern would take the next point but the Hornets would go on an 8-0 run for a double-digit lead at 14-4.
- SU would respond with four straight points and ASU would call a timeout in-between.
- ASU would close out set one on a 11-6 run for a final score of 25-14.
SET 2
- The teams would start the second set by trading points until Southern was finally able to get three straight points to take an 8-5 lead.
- ASU would start to come back and had the score at 9-8 in Southern's favor. The Lady Jaguars would once again go on a run, this time they would get four straight to extend the lead to 13-8, forcing the Hornets to use their first timeout.
- Alabama State would use a run of their own to come back and tie the game at 15-15.
- After the teams traded a couple points, SU would get three straight to hold on to a 19-16 lead.
- The lead would remain at three when ASU used their last timeout down 21-18.
- ASU would force Southern to call a timeout with the score 23-22 still in favor of the Lady Jaguars. Out of that timeout Leah Draine would get the kill to lock up set two 25-23.
SET 3
- Southern would jump out to a quick 5-2 lead to start the third set.
- ASU would respond and take the lead 7-6 forcing Southern to take their first timeout.
- Out of that timeout, the ASU lead would grow to 11-7 before Southern would make a run of their own to pull within one at 11-10.
- ASU would extend their lead to 18-13 and the Lady Jaguars would have to use their final timeout of the set.
- ASU would get the seven of the final eight points to win set three 25-14.
SET 4
- Southern jumped out to another early lead at 3-1.
- ASU would score the next four to take the lead 5-3.
- SU would come back to tie the set at 7 but the Hornets would respond with three straight to have the lead at 10-7.
- The Lady Jaguars would get five of the next seven to tie it back up at 12 apiece.
- The Hornets would take a one-point lead and Southern would tie it up each time until the score became 17-17.
- ASU would take a 20-18 advantage and the Lady Jaguars would call a timeout.
- Alabama State would force Southern to use their last timeout after getting two straight points to hold a 22-18 advantage.
- The Lady Jaguars won the next four points to tie the set at 22-22 and ASU would use their first timeout.
- ASU would take three of the final four points to secure set four, 25-23.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- ASU would have a 74-51 advantage in kills
- SU would finish with 13 blocks to six by ASU
- The Lady Jaguars had 32 assists, while the Hornets had 48
- Southern came away with 52 digs to 62 from ASU
- Draine and Janelle Pye-Blacknard had eight kills for the Lady Jaguars.
- Deffebaugh had seven blocks and Xaria Taylor had six for Southern
- Jordan Felix had 20 assists to lead Southern
- Trenity Lundy had 17 digs
