JACKSON, MS-- The Southern Jaguars women's basketball team went toe-to-toe with the number one team in the Southwestern Athletic Conference for forty minutes before falling to the Lady Tigers by eight points 66-58 in front 500 energetic fans inside Lee E. Williams Athletic and Assembly Center on the campus of Jackson State University.
The battle of number one versus number two in the Southwestern Athletic Conference was a game to watch. With 2:32 left in the game SU was only trailing by two points 56-54 when Jackson State went on a 4-0 run to force Southern to call a timeout with 1:35 remaining in the contest. JSU out rebounded SU 39-22.
Genovea Johnson led the Jaguars with 17 points, four rebounds and two assists. Diamond Hunter played a solid game off the bench finishing the night with eleven points and four rebounds in twenty-one minutes of play. Senior guard Nakia Kincey added eight points, four rebounds and three assists for the Jags.
"I thought that we competed extremely hard tonight and gave ourselves an opportunity to win. The game was right where we wanted it in the fourth quarter we just needed to make a few more plays said,
Carlos Funchess, SU Head Coach. I thought that their offensive rebounding was the difference in the game tonight.I'm really proud of the girls effort level and we will continue to work to get better."
The Lady Jaguars defense forced the Lady Tigers to 12 turnovers, picking up 12 points off turnovers. SU played 12 players with 10 landing in the scoring column. Southern shot 41 percent for the game (21-51) and 37 percent from behind the arc (4-11). SU shot 57 percent from the charity stripe finishing (12-21).
Ameshya Williams-Holliday led the Lady Tigers with 17 points and a game-high 14 boards all in thirty-five minutes of play. Keshuna Luckett added 14 points and six assists. Miya Crump chipped in 12 points and five boards for the lady Tigers.
UP NEXT
Southern will return home for a two-game home stand against Alabama A&M Lady Bulldogs (Feb. 5th) and Alabama State University Lady Hornets ( Feb. 7th) inside F. G. Clark Activity Center. Tipoff is slated for for 3 PM on the 5th and 5:30 PM on the 7th.
