Track and Field Continues to Improve

Houston– In a field loaded with 11 teams and a plethora of former college athletes, the Southern University Track and Field teams continued to have strong marks in Houston at the G5 & Super 22 Invitational hosted by the University of Houston on Friday and Saturday.

"I was pleased how the team performed this weekend," Head Coach Teremine White said. "We had a rigorous training throughout the week to get us prepared."

The Jaguars got things going Friday afternoon when Alexandria McCoy finished in the top 10 of the weight throw with 16.63m to finish seventh.

After winning the long jump last week at the Samford Open, Ja'Carrius Demmerritte finished in the top 5 for the third time. Demmerritte finished with 7.12m to finish fifth. His day was not over as he also finished fifth in the triple jump with a personal best of 14.82m. Kevon Hamilton finished with a personal best of 6.59m in the long jump. Rasheed Ricketts wasn't to be out done. He finished with personal best in the long jump, 6.48m, and the triple jump, 14.42m. His distance in the triple jump landed him in the top 10 at ninth.

In the men's weight throw, Garrick Breaux finished with a personal best of 13.26m.

Kason Jones had a breakout performance in the 200 and 400. Setting personal best in both, Jones ran a 21.95 to finish fourth on Saturday and the day before ran a 48.74 in the 400 to finish fourth. His weekend was not finished as he was also part of the 4x400.

After finishing second last weekend, Nicholas Scott looked to take things up a notch and took the crown this week in the 800m. Scott ran a 1:53.94, edging out Adam Mason of Houston by 0.2. He would also take part of the 4x400 to finish out the meet.

The 60m hurdles saw two Jaguars advance to the finals. Jordan Thompson ran an 8.44 in the prelims and finished just hundredths of a second behind his personal best in the finals to finish in sixth with a time of 8.37. Terrell Chevalier had his season best in the finals and was also just hundredths of a second behind his PR. Chevalier settled for seventh with a time of 8.48.

Trinity Bolden continued to make her mark in the 60m. Bolden tied her personal best of 7.52 in the prelims before going 7.56 and 7.59 in the semis and finals to finish with her third top 5 finish in fifth.

Lafayette Collins finished out the first day of competition in the 5000m. Two hours after setting a personal best of 4:38.59 in the mile, Collins set another personal best of 16:59.24 in the 5000.

The second day started with Logan Lewis setting a personal best in the shot-put with 13.37m to finish eighth. Lewis finished with four of her throws over 13m. Lawrenee' Hart finished with a season best of 12m.

The final running events kicked off towards the end of the field events. A'nijah Williams set a personal best of 25.67 in the 200m. Trinity Kirk and Kennedy Pedro were not far behind finishing at 25.94 and 25.95 respectively. Pedro's time was a season best.

For the first time this season, both the men and women competed in the distance medley relay. The women's team of Shani Simon, Sierra Session, Pedro, and Kashi Roberts finished with a time of 13:29.23. Scott, Ta'Cardrick Alexander, Rushane Miller, and Collins teamed up for the men to finish with a time of 10:43.44.

The final events of the day, the 4x400, saw both the men and women set season best. The team of Williams, Kirk, Simon, and Pedro ran 3:54.34 to finish in fifth, the third top 5 finish of the season. DeAnthony Nervis, Jones, Thompson, and Scott took to the track in the final event of the day. Their time of 3:20.15 was good enough to place them third, just a half second behind second.

In the first scoring event of the season, the men were able to come away with a fourth-place finish with 51 points. The women were only able to finish with 16 which placed them in tenth.

Southern will next travel to the other side of town for the Bayou Bengal hosted by LSU on Friday, February 4. Field events are scheduled to begin at 9:30 am with the women's weight throw and running events at 1:00 pm with the women's 60m.
