Southern Knocks off Mississippi Valley 67-58

 BATON ROUGE, LA -- Senior guard Amani Mcwain's records her first double-double of the season lifting Southern University to a 67-58 win over Mississippi Valley Saturday afternoon in front of 1,789 fans inside F. G. Clark Activity Center.

With 7:45 left in the fourth quarter the Delta Devilettes had a one-point lead on the Jaguars 48-47 until Mcwain hit a 3 three-pointer at the top of the key to put the Jaguars up by two points. Mississippi Valley would not go away when Jasmine Elliott his a long distance three ball to put the Delta Devilettes up by one-point again. Nakia KinceyKayla Watson and Mcwain led the late surge to lift the SU over MVSU.  

Mcwain led the Jaguars with gane-high 18 points and a game-high 11 rebounds all in twenty-eight minutes of play. Kincey and Genovea Johnson finished with 12 points each. Watson chipped in eight points, five boards and four steals. 
 

"I told the girls I gave them a lot of credit for playing tough and getting that run," Southern coach Carlos Funchess said. "They played tough defense, got some steals and went and scored. We had missed so many easy shots, especially early in the game."

The Lady Jaguars defense forced the Lady Tigers to 28 turnovers, picking up 23 points off turnovers. SU played 11 players with 9 landing in the scoring column. Southern shot a whopping 40 percent for the game (26-65) and 27 percent from behind the arc (4-15). SU shot 73 percent from the charity stripe finishing (11-15).

Annya Moss led the Delta Devilettes with 15 points and seven rebounds. Da'Sha McGloster finished the night with 11 points. 

UP NEXT
Southern will return to action on Saturday, January 29th as they travel down Hwy 61 to take on Alcorn State University Braves inside the Davey Whitney Complex on the campus of Alcorn State Univesity. Tip off is slated for 3 PM.
