BIRMINGHAM, AL
– Southern University Track and Field had another impressive outing at the Samford Open hosted by Samford University at the Birmingham Crossplex on Saturday.
"We had a bunch of athletes that did well today." Head Coach
Teremine White said after the meet. "The team is working on staying consistent throughout the competition."
Consistency was the theme for the Jaguars as they placed 30 athletes inside the top 10 in their events.
The Jaguars got the day started with the women's and men's shot put. In her second meet as a Jaguar, Freshman
A'ja Gore almost set a personal best in her fourth throw at 13.2m to finish fifth.
Logan Lewis finished up not far behind in sixth with a throw of 13m.
On the men's side,
Keenan Villery set a personal mark of 14.42m, which settled him into fifth.
Char'Vares Wilson was also able to crack the top 10 in ninth with a throw of 13.36m. The high marks didn't stop there for the Jaguars.
Garrick Breaux set a personal best at 12.64m while
Kolby Mathews set a season best at 12.32m.
Next up in the field events was the long jump where the men placed two in the top 10 and the women were able to place one.
Ja'Carrius Demmerritte picked another win on the season soaring an indoor personal best 7.23m, previous win was in the triple jump.
Kevon Hamilton was the other Jaguar to land in the top 10, also had a personal best to settle for ninth at 6.4m.
On the women's side of things
Katrina Anderson placed in the top 5 at fourth at 5.41m, which was a personal best.
Yahria Bass was able to improve from her first meet as a Jaguar when she jumped a personal best of 4.72m.
The weight throw was next up, and the Jaguars placed three inside the top 10.
Alexandria McCoy set a person best of 17.25m to finish fourth. She currently has the best mark in the SWAC.
Lawrenee' Hart also finished in the top five at fifth with a personal best of 15.68m.
Jazzmine Poole finished just inside the top 10 in tenth with her personal best of 14.1m.
In the shot-put, both the men and women placed two athletes inside the top 10. For the women, Gore set a personal best at 13.2 to finish fifth. Just behind her was Lewis in sixth with a throw of 13m. On the men's side of things, Villery finished with a personal best mark of 14.42m to finish fifth. Wilson placed ninth at 13.36m.
For the second week in a row a Jaguar took home the men's triple jump. This time Hamilton took the win at 14.01m.
The running events started with the women's 60m. The Jaguars were able to advance four into the semis and two into the finals.
Trinity Bolden won each heat she was in, improving her time with each one. In the semis she set a personal best of 7.56 only to beat that at 7.52 to take the win. Bolden's mark sits her atop of the SWAC.
Trinity Kirk was able to so take the final spot in the finals just ahead of teammate
A'niya Galloway. She took advantage of that opportunity to finish sixth with a time 7.99.
The men were able to get one into the finals.
DeAnthony Nervis finished in fourth with a 6.93.
Jada Chevalier was able to pick up a third-place finish in the 60H with a time of 8.95 in the finals.
The 200m produced more top 10 finishes for the Jaguars. Bolden, Kirk, and Galloway finished in sixth, seventh, and eighth with times of 26.02, 26.05, and 26.08. Nervis set a personal best of 21.73 to place him at fourth.
In the women's 400m, Southern was able to place two inside the top 10.
Jada Childers and
A'nijah Williams finished eighth and ninth with times of 59.03 and 59.3.
Continuing the theme of the night, the 800 found more Jaguars inside the top 10.
Nicholas Scott set the mark for SWAC at 1:52.5.
Rushane Miller had his personal best of 1:55.57 to finish sixth.
Shani Simon was the lone woman to finish in the top 10 at seventh with a time of 2:25.51.
The final events of the day were the women's and men's 4x400. The team of Childers, Williams, Kirk, and Simon took home second, just three seconds behind at 4:00.5. The men's team was able to come away in fourth at 3:24.35.
Southern will next travel for the Houston G5 & Super 22 Invitational on January 28 and 29 hosted by the University of Houston at Yeoman Fieldhouse.
