COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Southern University Track and Field took to the track for the first time Friday afternoon at the Ted Nelson Invitational hosted by Texas A&M at the Gilliam Indoor Stadium.
"It is always great to start the season with personal best, top performances, and winning the final race of the day, the women's 4 x 400." Coach
Teremine White said about the first meet.
The Jaguars got two wins and multiple personal best. The event was a non-scoring meet so there were no final team standings.
One of the first events of the day saw
Logan Lewis and
Alexandria McCoy finish in the top ten in the shot-put. Lewis finished sixth with a throw of 42-05 ft and McCoy was not far behind in ninth at 41-03 ft. McCoy would come back and take third in the weight throw at 53-01 ft.
The Jaguars would get their first win of the day on the men's side of the field events. The duo of
Ja'Carrius Demmerritte and
Kevon Hamilton would take the top two spots in the triple jump. Demmerritte soared 47-4.5 ft with Hamilton, in his first meet as a Jaguar, not far behind at 46-9 ft.
The running events did not disappoint either. SU was able to secure another win and more great finishes.
On the men's side,
Jordan Thompson finished with a personal best of 8.33 to finish eighth in the 60m hurdles.
When the women took to the track things started to heat up.
In the first running event of the day,
Trinity Bolden took the first heat with a 7.68 in the 60m. She followed that up with a 7.58 in the finals to finish second.
After Bolden's run in the prelims,
Jada Chevalier set the pace in the 60m hurdles. She too won the first heat with a time of 8.92. An hour later Chevalier set a new personal best of 8.86 to finish in fifth.
Finishing second in her heat and sixth overall,
Trinity Kirk got her Jaguar career started on a high note with a time of 25.63 in the 200m.
The final fireworks on the day came in the women's 4 x 400. The last event for the Jaguars proved to be a winner. The team of
Jada Chevalier,
A'nijah Williams, Kirk, and
Qymeisha Mayhew with a time of 3:55.64 was .29 seconds ahead of second place Lamar.
Southern will next travel to Birmingham, AL for the Samford Invitational Friday and Saturday, January 21-22.
