BATON ROUGE, LA. – The Southern University Lady Jaguars (2-5-1, 0-1) fell to the Texas Southern University Lady Tigers (2-5, 1-0) 3-2 Friday afternoon in Jaguar Park to open up SWAC play.
The match was back and forth the whole way, but the Lady Jags just fell short of the comeback.
TSU score the first goal of the game off a corner kick that led to the first of two goals by the Lady Tigers' midfielder Ashley Arnes. Not long after,
Surya Nero equalized the game with the first of her two goals.
Ashante' Gatlin launched the ball into the box where
Nero hit the header into the bottom left corner of the net at the 19-minute mark.
For the rest of the half, the teams went back and forth. The Lady Tigers outshot the Lady Jags, but goalie
Chioma Eriken played phenomenal like she has all season. She finished the game with six saves, including a crucial penalty kick late in the second half to keep the Jags within striking distance.
The second half looked like it may have gotten out of hand when TSU scored two goals within the first six minutes.
Southern collected themselves and went on the attack. This time
Brekel Tibbs took her shot as scoring but just missed by hitting the left post.
Nero got her second goal of the night when collected the rebound and riffled it in, this time in the right corner. That brought the Jags to within one in the 55
th minute mark of the game.
The teams continued to play a hard game as they had all night. The Lady Jags had 13 more shots that wouldn't miss by much. They finished the game with 22 total shots with nine of them being on goal.
