Southern defeats Texas Southern 12-9 to secure weekend series win

BATON ROUGE, LA. -- Southern (15-27, 13-11 SWAC) pounded out 14 hits to take a 12-9 win over Texas Southern in their final game of the weekend series at the Lee-Hines Field on Sunday afternoon.

TSU struck in the first inning taking the early 1-0 lead.

Southern responded and got on the board as Judah Wilbur hit a solo home run to left center field. On the next batter Taj Porter hits another solo home run to left center as the Jaguars would lead 2-1 in the bottom of the first inning.

The Tigers scored one run in the top of the second and two runs in the top of third inning, taking the 4-2 advantage. 

Southern added four more runs in the bottom of the third when Tremaine Spears hit a three-run homer over the left field wall. 

Texas Southern responded with four runs in the top of the sixth inning. However the Jaguars continued their offensive production as Jonathan Evans hit a three-run home run over the right field wall to put the Jaguars up 9-8 heading to the top of the eighth inning. 

In the bottom of the eighth inning Southern added three insurance runs extending their lead 12-8. 

TSU scored one run in the ninth inning. 

Southern finished the weekend with 31 total hits and scored 29 runs in three games.

Jovante Dorris and Taj Porter lead the Jaguars with three hits. Dorris scored two runs and Porter added four, while Jonathan Evans had two hits, one run and five RBI's. Wilbur finished with two hits and and scored one run. Spears scored two runs, had two hits and four RBI's. 

Dimitri Frank (3-0) picked up the win for Southern, working 1.2 innings and giving up no runs with two strikeouts. Enrique Ozoa came in for the final inning and struck out two of the three batters he faced.

UP NEXT
The Jaguars will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to University of Louisiana at Lafayette for 6:00 pm first pitch.
