Southern Baseball rolls over Grambling State 10-3

GRAMBLING, LA. -- Southern (11-17, 9-6 SWAC) defeated Grambling State, taking game three of the weekend series 10-3 Sunday afternoon at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E. Jones Park.

Southern got on the board first in the top of the second when Jonathan Evans doubled to right field, then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Jahli Hendricks RBI single up the middle scored Evans taking the 1-0 lead. 

In the top of the third inning, Tremaine Spears solo home run to left center pushing the Jaguars lead to 2-0. 

Evans started the top of the fourth with a single through the right side. He then stole second and was brought home by Jovante Dorris RBI single to center field for the 3-0 Jaguar lead. 

O'Neill Burgos two run home run to left field in the top of the fifth extended the Jaguars lead to 5-0.

In the top of the seventh inning Taj Porter got on base for SU with a walk. Next batter Zavier Moore advanced to first after being hit by a pitch and Porter moved to second. Jahli Hendricks triple scored both Porter and Moore for a 7-0 Southern lead. 

The Tigers would score two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning making it 7-2 SU. 

Burgos second home run of the day over the left field wall scored two runs for the Jaguars taking a 9-2 lead.

Armstrong fielder's choice in top of the ninth scored Evans extending the Jaguars lead 10-2. 

Evans led Southern with three hits and scored three runs. Burgos had four RBI's and scored two runs. Hendricks had two hits and three RBI's while Dorris had two hits and one RBI. The Jaguars recorded 12 hits on the afternoon against three different Tigers pitchers.

Joseph Battaglia III (3-1) picked up the win for the Jaguars, pitching all 6.1 innings and giving up five hits and striking out two. 

UP NEXT
The Jaguars will be back in action at home on Friday when they host Prairie View A&M, with first pitch being scheduled for 6:00 pm.
