BATON ROUGE, LA. -- Southerns'
Taneara Moore records her first double-double of the season but that wasn't enough for the Lady Jaguars as Jackson State pulls off the 59-49 win Monday night at the F.G. Clark Activity Center.
After trailing by two-points at the end of the first half, the Lady Jaguars went back and forth with JSU in the third quarter to take a one-point lead into the fourth quarter. The Lady Tigers came out in the fourth on fire taking the lead from the Lady Jaguars. With 5:14 left in the game
Nakia Kincey grabbed a defensive rebound and took the rock coast-to-coast for a layup to pull SU within four points, 48-52. But that was as close as SU would get as they only scored one more point in the final five minutes.
Taneara Moore and Genovea Johnson finished the night with 10 points each. Moore grabbed a game-high 11 boards and a career-high four blocks. Amani Mcwain chipped in eight points along with three rebounds. Nakia Kincey and Chloe Fleming added six points each for the Lady Jaguars
"We came out with a lot of energy and got off to a great first quarter start tonight. Our defensive pressure caused them some problems and we got some easy baskets early in the game. I knew that it would be a defensive battle because we both do a good job guarding the ball as well as scouting opponents. Going into the fourth quarter we were in a good position to win the game but couldn't hit our shots down the stretch. I think fatigue may have been a factor late in the game but we have to find a way to score the basketball. I was pleased with our effort level and we will continue to work to get ready for our next game this weekend", said Head Coach Carlos Funchess.
The Lady Jaguars defense forced the Lady Tigers to 14 turnovers, picking up 11 points off turnovers. SU played all ten players with nine landing in the scoring column. Southern shot 28 percent for the game (15-54) and 11 percent from behind the arc (1-9). SU shot 82 percent from the charity stripe finishing (18-22).
Dayzsha Rogan had a game-high 20 points along with five rebounds for the Lady Tigers. Antionette Womack finished the night with a double-double with eleven points and eleven rebounds.
