Lady Jaguars Defeat Grambling State 70-63

BATON ROUGE, LA. -- Southern fell behind early but turned up the defensive intensity in the second quarter to take the lead and never looked back as they defeated Grambling State 70-63 at the F.G. Clark Activity Center on Saturday night.

After trailing 17-10 at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Jaguars got a huge three-point basket from senior guard Nakia Kincey with 6:25 remaining in the second quarter to give SU the lead and they never trailed again in the ballgame. SU took a six-point lead into the half.

Southern was led by Senior guard Nakia Kincey with 16 points along with five rebounds and five steals. Genovea Johnson and Amani Mcwain chipped in 14 points each. Chloe Fleming added eleven points and two rebounds.

"We struggled to score early but we played with the kind of defensive intensity that it takes to win. Our starters were really focused in on all the details that we had prepared for throughout the week. I thought that our second unit came in and provided a big offensive spark to get us going tonight. Rivalry games are always tough and Coach Murray does a great job having his teams prepared. It was a good win for us and now we have to get ready for a very talented Jackson State team coming in here on Monday", said Head Coach Carlos Funchess.

The Lady Jaguars defense forced the Lady Tigers to 29 turnovers, picking up 20 points off turnovers. SU played all ten players with nine landing in the scoring column. Southern shot 38 percent for the game (20-53) and 42 percent from behind the arc (5-12). SU shot 65 percent from the charity stripe finishing (25-39).

Alexus Holt finished the night with 18 points for the Lady Tigers. Leah Morrow added 11 points. Baton Rouge native Justice Coleman finished the night with a game-high 12 rebounds.
