BATON ROUGE, LA -- Southern and Alabama A&M meet for the first time during the 2021 season and the game went down to the wire with the Lady Jaguars dropping a heartbreaker to the Lady Bulldogs 78-76 Wednesday afteroon at the F.G. Clark Activity Center.
Trailing by three points at the end of the first quarter the Lady Jaguars and Lady Bulldogs battled back and forth throughout the entire game led by
Genovea Johnson, Nakia Kincey and Amani Mcwain. The trio combined for 56 points for the Southern. Down by two with thirteen seconds left in the game SU called their final time out of the game to draw up one final play. Johnson with 21 points along with five rebound and three assists. Mcwain added 18 points and four rebounds. Kincey chipped in 17 points and four assists. True freshman Zaria Harleaux had a career-high seven points and three rebounds.
"Today's game was really tough for us in the post because their size and skill set. They did a really good job getting the ball to their bigs on the block against both zone and man defense. Without
Raven White we are really thin at the post position and they did a good job taking advantage of her absence. We switched our defensive sets a lot tonight and tried to keep them off balance with some different looks. I thought on offense we did a good job sharing the ball and getting it to the open shooters most of the game. This loss was disappointing but the good thing is we were in position to win the game so we will learn from it and get better", said Head Coach Carlos Funchess.
The Lady Jaguars defense forced the Lady Bulldogs to 15 turnovers, picking up 23 points off turnovers. SU played all nine players with eight landing in the scoring column. Southern shot 56 percent for the game (28-50) and 50 percent from behind the arc (6-12). SU shot 56 percent from the charity stripe finishing (14-25).
Dariauna Lewis led all scorers with 24 points along with a game high 19 rebounds. Nigeria Jones added 22 points along with Elexis Evans chipping in 18 points. The Lady Bulldogs finished with 44 points oin the paint.
