BATON ROUGE, LA. -- Southern delivers a dominating performance on Monday night as the Lady Jaguars swept Alabama State in the season series by defeating the Lady Hornets 64-47 Monday night at the F.G. Clark Activity Center.
The Lady Jaguars took a 30-12 lead into the half off hot hands from
Amani Mcwain and Kayla Watson who each had eight points in the first half.
Southern was led by
Mcwain with 15 points along with six rebounds. Watson added 11 points, two assists and three boards. Genovea Johnson chipped in 10 points, four rebounds and two steals. Tyeniesha Metcalf finished the night with nine points and six assists.
"The young ladies did a great job playing our zone defense and rebounding the basketball. On the offensive side we did a really good job of sharing the ball and taking open shots. We had some really good individual performances from
Kayla Watson and
Amani Mcwain but overall it took the entire team pulling together to get this win. I can see the growth and development with the team so hopefully we will continue to get better throughout these last four games", said Head Coach Carlos Funchess.
SU lead by as much as 23 points in the second half. The Lady Jaguars defense forced the Lady Hornets to 21 turnovers, picking up 15 points off turnovers. SU played all nine players with eight landing in the scoring column. Southern shot 44 percent for the game (24-55) and 27 percent from behind the arc (4-15). SU shot 60 percent from the charity stripe finishing (12-20).
Alabama State was lead by Jayla Crawford who finished the night with a game-high 18 points.

The Lady Jaguars will be back in action on Wednesday, February 24th as the take on Alabama A&M, tip off is slated for 12:00 pm.
