Southern Drops A Close One to Memphis 57-50

MEMPHIS, TN -- The Southern Jaguars women's basketball team battled back and forth all game as they drop their fifth straight game of the season at Memphis on Saturday afternoon. Final score was 57-50 inside Elma Roane Fieldhouse on the campus of University of Memphis.

The Lady Jaguars jumped out on the Lady Tigers 14-10 at the end of the first quarter, but went scoreless the first eight minutes of the second quarter before rallying back to trail by eight going into the half. Trading shot for shot in the third quarter the SU outshot Memphis 13-10 in the third quarter.

"Memphis has a good basketball team but I felt like our pressure defense would give them problems. We forced some early turnovers and had the lead  but struggled to score. Their zone defense gave us some problems and that's something we need to improve on quickly, said Carlos Funshess, SU Head Coach. The ladies played hard and we had opportunities to go ahead in the fourth quarter but just couldn't get over the hump. We will get back in the gym tomorrow and work hard to get better".

Junior guard Genovea Johnson led all scorers with13 points, one rebounds and two assists in twenty-six minutes of play. Sophomore guard Diamond Hunter  finished the night with 11 points. Senior guard Kayla Watson chipped in eight points and four rebounds in thirteen minutes of play. Raven White finished the day with team-high six rebounds.

The Lady Jaguars defense forced the Lady Tigers to 22 turnovers, picking up 21 points off turnovers. SU played eleven players with ten landing in the scoring column. Southern shot 37 percent for the game (19-52) and 28 percent from behind the arc (5-18). SU shot 78 percent from the charity stripe finishing (7-9)

Jamirah Shutes was the only Lady Tiger to finish the day in double figures with 11 points, six rebounds and 3 assists. Emani Jefferson and Tyler Frierson finished the day with nine points each.
