Lady Jags Fall Short in Four Sets Against Grambling State

BATON ROUGE, LA-- Southern University Jaguars (7-14,6-9) fell short to the Grambling State University Tigers in a four-set match Monday night inside Clifford Seymour Gymnasium. 
 
The first set was a stagnant match for the Jaguars as the Tigers took an early lead. Ravon Robertson led the set with a total of four kills, three accounting for the first points for Southern. Grambling was able to keep a double-digit lead ending the set 25-13.
 
In set two, GSU was able to open a lead with eight straight points before senior Brook Jefferson had a kill to get the Jaguars on the scoreboard. Within a few a back-and-forth rallies, the Jags were able to catch their stride with the Tigers closing the final score gap to only five but still not able to take the win.
 
During set three, Southern was able to keep a close score as they had back-to-back ties within the first few points. They then was able to regain the lead by multiple attack errors giving them an advantage against GSU. The Jags led and won this set with a total of 11 kills, led by Kendall Dutton with a total of five. 
 
The last and final set of the night didn't go as planned for the Jags as they couldn't keep a constant lead against the Tigers. GSU had a three-point lead until multiple kills by Xaria Taylor and Dutton closed the score gap, becoming a 18-18 tie. The match began to become a game of back and forth as both teams tried to regain the lead and win the match. In the end, the Jags were unable to beat the Tigers in a close set of 25-23.
 
Dutton and Robertson led the Jaguars with a total of 13 kills each followed by Xaria Taylor with 11. Kyla Carrier and Ryleigh Taylor played a big part in helping the Jags with Carrier having 21 assists and Taylor with 12. Trenity Lundy led the team with 28 digs followed by Brook Jefferson with 18.
