BATON ROUGE, LA--The Southern University volleyball team (8-14, 7-9) defeated Alcorn State University Thursday night in Seymour Gymnasium in three straight sets on Senior Night.

Prior to the match up, Southern honored the contributions of four members of the volleyball program. Right sideÂ

Brook Jefferson, Middle BlockerÂ
Xaria Taylor, and SetterÂ
Ryleigh Taylor were all recognized for their years of competing on the team.

In the opening set, the Jags started slow as the Braves were able to keep a lead up until the thirteenth point when a kill byÂ
Nya Campbell granted a tie in the match. After seeing the energy in the Jags, the switch was flipped as the Braves couldn't keep a lead causing the Jags to get straight kills contributed byÂ
Kendall Dutton, Xaria Taylor, Ravon Robertson, and Nya Campbell. Southern was able to come out on top and win the first set 25-20.

In the second set, with a quick 8-3 advantage, the Jags were able to keep a constant lead ahead of the Braves the entire set. With five straight kills, Southern had a seven-point difference with 15-8 being the score. Southern would go on to win the second set 25-17.

Set three, the Jaguars were able to score eight points back-to-back. By this time, the atmosphere was pumped with the Human Jukebox playing in the background. With this eight-point streak, it opened a 10-point lead for Southern, only allowing Alcorn to score simply by a couple of errors to gain points. With a final kill by seniorÂ
Joilyn Azore, the Jaguars took the victory with a 25-16 score.

Ryleigh Taylorhad a strong senior night as well as she had a total of 12 digs and 17 assists.Â
Brook Jefferson also ended her senior night well with a total of 11 digs.

This was the final game of the SWAC season for the Jaguars as they prepare for seeding for the upcoming SWAC Volleyball Tournament. The tournament will be held in Huntsville, Alabama being hosted by Alabama A&M Athletics.
