BATON ROUGE, LA – The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) notified Southern University on November 16, 2021. That it has removed a five-year-long probation on its athletics department and Southern University has been restored to full rights and privileges of NCAA membership.
The NCAA placed Southern University on probation November 16, 2016 saying the university "lacked institutional control" associated with student-athlete eligibility from 2009 to 2014 and the NCAA's committee on infractions says Southern improperly certified more than 200 student-athletes during a six-year period in all 15 sports. The NCAA stated the university exceeded scholarship limits in baseball, women's and men's track, football and softball by not counting additional aid it got from the state of Louisiana. The NCAA said Southern also did not enforce penalties for reduced practice time.
"We are very pleased that the Committee has recognized the diligent work of our Department of Athletics" stated Southern University President-Chancellor Dr. Ray Belton. "I want to personally thank our Director of Athletics
Roman Banks for his sacrifices, commitment and leadership ensuring that the University is in full compliance with all NCAA regulations.
"I want to thank our President-Chancellor Dr. Ray Belton, Board Chairman Atty. Domoine Rutledge and our Board of Supervisors for entrusting me to lead this athletic department and letting me make the corrective actions that we needed to make in order to move our department forward. We have made tremendous strides during the last five years and will continue to keep moving us forward. This was a total team effort and I want to personally thank everyone on the team for their dedication and hard work. This is a great day for Southern University," commented Director of Athletics
Roman Banks.
Southern University sponsors 15 sports - six men and nine women - and competes within the Southwestern Athletic Conference on the NCAA Division I level.
