Southern Drops a Close One to Grambling 64-67

GRAMBLING, LA -- Despite Amani Mcwain 17-point effort the Lady Jaguars weren't able to overcome the Lady Tigers on the road at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center falling 64-67.

The Lady Jaguars started the game on a 12-5 run to open the first quarter, but slowed down in the second quarter letting GSU out score them 16-9 taking the lead into the locker room 33-27.

SU had four players finish the afternoon in double-digits led by Junior guard Mcwain with 17 points along with a game-high 10 rebounds. Senior point guard Caitlin Davis was a perfect 2-of-2 (100%) from long distance, finishing with 12 points, two assists and two steals. Raven White and Taneara Moore added 10 points each. White finished the night with seven rebounds and two blocks. Nakia Kincey chipped in eight points, four boards and three steals in 29 minutes of play.

"I thought we did a good job early by moving the ball and making some open shots. Unfortunately we got into foul trouble during the 2nd quarter and had to change our player rotation. Tonight we didn't do a good job in transition defense and gave up too many layups. Despite having some key players out with injuries the girls fought hard and stayed in the game until the end. We're going to look at the game film and get ready for Jackson State.", said Head Coach Carlos Funchess.

The Lady Jaguars defense forced the Lady Tigers to 19 turnovers, picking up 21 points off turnovers. SU played all eleven players with seven landing in the scoring column. Southern shot 40 percent for the game (24-60) and 29 percent from behind the arc (4-14). SU shot 57 percent from the charity stripe finishing (12-21).

Candice Parramore led the Lady Tigers with 17 points, while Justice Coleman pitched in 14 points and Alexus Holt, Brandi Washington both finished with 10 points.
