BATON ROUGE, LA -- Despite trailing the entire first half, the Lady Jaguars turned up the intensity to close out the third quarter outscoring the Lady Panthers 18-8 to pull off the come back win over Prairie View A&M 51-44 Saturday afternoon at the F.G. Clark Activity Center.
SU trailed by as many as 13 points in the third quarter until
Amani Mcwain hit a three-pointer right in front of the SU bench with 1:24 left in the third, as SU had its first lead of the day. During the fourth quarter the Lady Jaguars went on a 9-0 run capped off by Johnson jumper with 2:39 left to play and they never looked back.
Genovea Johnson and Kayla Watson led the Jags in scoring with nine points each. Johnson finished with three rebounds and four steals in 24 minutes of play. Nakia Kincey added seven points and four rebounds. Taneara Moore finished with a game-high nine rebounds and three assists. Raven White added seven rebounds and two steals for the Lady Jaguars.
"I thought that we were playing a little tight on offense in the first two quarters and missed some easy shots. We did a good job moving the basketball and got some good looks at the basket but couldn't get any shots to fall. Defensively the team did a phenomenal job by holding them to only 13 points in the second half. We will go back and look at the game as we get ready for a tough game vs Grambling next week.", said Head Coach Carlos Funchess.
The Lady Jaguars defense forced the Lady Panthers to 28 turnovers, picking up 30 points off turnovers. SU played all eleven players with nine landing in the scoring column. Southern shot 31 percent for the game (19-60) and 24 percent from behind the arc (5-21). SU shot 50 percent from the charity stripe finishing (8-16).
Diana Rosenthal and Kennedi Heard lead the Lady Panthers with 11 points.
