BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southwestern Athletic Conference has named Southern's
Jada Childers its SWAC Women's Track Athlete of the Week and Jackson State's Hannah White its SWAC Women's Field Athlete of the Week for their outstanding performances during competition Jan. 15-17.
Childers a Sophomore from Tuscaloosa, AL opened the 2021 spring season on Saturday at the LSU Purple Tiger Invitational competing in the 400-meter dash. She finished 1st overall in the finals with a time of (59.17) in her first event of the season. Childers currently ranks as the 62nd best time in NCAA Division I while also leading the conference.
White (Chandler, Arizona) placed first place at both the Vulcan and Blazer Invitationals over the weekend with throws of 13.96m and 14.12m in the shotput event. Those marks currently stand as two of the top marks amongst conference performers.
Other notable performances:
- Alcorn State's Qua'Neshia Hamilton opened up her Alcorn State career in style by winning the triple jump hitting a mark of 11.84m during the UAB Blazer Invite. She bested a field of 10 in the event. The next day in the Vulcan Invitational, Hamilton placed sixth in the long jump hitting a mark of 5.22m. She competed against 26 in the field.
- Alabama State's Dasia Newell participated in both meets this weekend for Alabama State. She opened her season with a 10th place finish overall (eighth highest collegiate athlete) in the high jump at the Blazer Invitational. She recorded a height of 1.45 meters in the event. She followed that up with a 10th place finish overall (eighth highest collegiate athlete) in the high jump during the Vulcan Invitational on Saturday with a clearance of 1.50 meters.
- Alcorn State's Bethany Sanders posted a top-five finish in the 400-meter dash at the Vulcan Invitational when she crossed with a time of 1:00.40 to come in fifth. Sanders competed against a field of nearly 20 in the event.
- Jackson State's Jallah Galimah ran the one mile run in a time of 4:22.84 to finish 5th overall this past weekend for JSU Women's Track and Field.
