Southern Runs Past Tigers 89-74 for Sixth Straight Win

BATON ROUGE, LA -- Southern picks up its sixth straight conference win as the Jaguars dominated Texas Southern 89-74 Thursday night at the F.G. Clark Activity Center, clinching a first round SWAC Conference Tournament Quarterfinal home game on Tuesday, March 10 at 7:30 pm.

Southern is now 15-15 on the year and 12-5 in the SWAC, tied for second place with TSU, entering Saturday afternoon's home game with Prairie View. 

Texas Southern drops to 15-15 and 12-5 in the league.

Southern had the lead for 36 minutes of the game that included three ties and three lead changes. In the first half the Jaguars had two big scoring runs starting with an 11-0 run at the 11:36 mark after Lamarcus Lee jump shot and then a 19-0 run heading into halftime led by Ahsante Shivers nine points during the 6:54 run, as SU led 51-29. Texas Southern in the first half was 9-of-21 (43%) and 3-of-7 from behind the arc (43%). SU was 17-of-27 in the first half (63%) and 4-of-8 from the arc (50%). 

Lamarcus Lee led SU with a game-high 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting and 2-of-2 from the charity stripe. Damiree Burns came off the bench and added 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting and five rebounds. Ahsante Shivers contributed 13 points on 3-of-5 shooting, 2-of-2 from behind the arc and 5-of-8 from free throw line along with five rebounds. Amel Kuljuhovic finished the night with 10 points, four rebounds and two blocks

For the game, TSU was 23-of-50 from the field, 7-of-15 from three and 21-of-25 at the free throw line. The Jaguars largest lead of the night was 25 points and SU finished the game shooting 29-of-47 (62%) 6-of-16 (38%) from three point range and 25-of-33 at the charity stripe (75.8%).

Southern out rebounded TSU 30-20, had a 20-14 advantage in points off turnovers and outscored the Tigers bench 39-28.
