Southern falls to #13 Mississippi State 79-55

Starkville, Mississippi -- Despite an evenly matched contest the first 15 minutes of the first half until the Lady Bulldogs turned up the intensity to win big over the Lady Jaguars Friday night at Humphrey Coliseum in Starkville, Mississippi. The final score was 79-55.

After sitting out of the Baylor game Genovea Johnson picked right up where she left off making her presence known by disrupting the opposing team defense driving to the lane and creating shots for her teammates. Johnson led the Jaguars in scoring in five games this season finishing the night with 12 points and three rebounds. Johnson shot 83 percent from the charity stripe. Jordan Aikens added 10 points and three rebounds in twenty-one minutes of play. Amani Mcwain led the SU in rebounds with 6 and chipped in seven points.

"We did a much better job on the boards tonight by only giving up 10-second chance points. I was really proud of the way that the ladies competed in every quarter. We're going to keep working and hopefully continue to get better.", said Head Coach Carlos Funchess.

The Lady Jaguars defense forced the Lady Bulldogs to 12 turnovers, picking up 8 points off turnovers. SU played all twelve players with ten landing in the scoring column. Southern shot 32 percent for the game (18-57) and 36 percent from behind the arc (5-14). SU shot 78 percent from the charity stripe finishing (14-18).

The Lady Bulldogs had four players in double digits led by Jessika Carter with a game-high 17 points and game-high 11 boards, Rickea Jackson with 15, Aliyah Matharu with 11 and Myah Taylor with 10. JaMya Mingo-Young had a game-high six assists.
