BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – In a season that witnessed the fall of the Southwestern Athletic Conference all-time rushing record, runnning back Lenard Tillery added another compliment to his stellar career at Southern University.
And several of his teammates will join him in commemorating a phenomenal 2016 season.
Nine Jaguars secured 10 spots on the 2016 All-SWAC team, including an unprecedented nine first team selections.
The SWAC announced its postseason football awards in voting conducted by league head coaches and sports information directors on Wednesday, just two days prior to its 2016 Toyota SWAC Football Championship on Saturday, Dec. 3, at NRG Stadium in Houston.
Tillery, a product of McKinley High, rushed for 1,670 yards and 13 TDs, breaking Odie Posey's 1,399 single season rushing mark in 1949. In eleven games, Tillery rushed for over 100 yards in 10 games and rushed for over 200 yards twice.
The Jaguars offense, led by Tillery who set the league's all-time leading rusher record this season, landed six first team selections including a trio of offensive lineman (Anthony Mosley, Terrell Lee, and Jamal Bolden) who plowed open several running lanes for the Baton Rouge native over the last three season. Tight end Dillon Beard becomes the second consecutive Jaguar to earn All-SWAC
Willie Quinn, who surpassed Michael Hayes as Southern's all-time leader in receptions and receiving yards, added a first team nod at wide receiver while repeating as the league top - and most feared - return specialist.
For the second straight year, Danny Johnson picked up a first team selection after posting a career high seven interceptions to match his total from his freshman and sophomore campaigns. Johnson added a TD return against Tulane in September. With a team high nine sacks, defensive end Aaron Tiller earned a first team selection after being named to the second team in 2015.
Signal caller Austin Howard becomes a two-time All-SWAC second team selection after throwing for 2,655 yards and 29 TDs.
Grambling State quarterback Devante Kincade was named Offensive Player of the Year, and fellow Tiger Donovan McCray secured Defensive Player of the Year accolades with. Alabama A&M running back Jordan Bentley received the Freshman of the Year award, and Prairie View A&M's Joshua Simmons landed the Newcomer of the Year award. Grambling coach Broderick Fobbs took home his third-straight SWAC Coach of the Year award.
Grambling State picked up the most all-conference selections with 14. Southern was next with 10 selections. Both Grambling State and Southern had an astounding nine players garner first-team consideration.
