SU?s 2014 football attendance tops all HBCUs

Southern University's football program had the highest average home attendance in 2014 than any other historically black college and university in the country, according to the NCAA.

In fact, Southern, with an average home game attendance of 15,416, easily out-distanced the next closest HBCUs, North Carolina A&T, Jackson State University and Alabama State University.

The 2014 National College Football Attendance report showed that Southern finished in 8th place among NCAA Division 1 Football Championship Subdivision teams.

This is the third consecutive year that Southern has finished in the top 10 among FCS schools in average game attendance.

Also according to the report, the SWAC finished in first place among all Division 1 FCS conferences in average game attendance. The SWAC average game attendance was 12,781 in 2014. The Missouri Valley averaged 10,807 and the Big Sky had 9,508. The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, comprised of HBCUs, finished in fifth place, averaging 8,765 per game.

The Jaguars opened its 2015 home scheduled on Sept. 19 when Southern host rival Jackson State in A.W. Mumford Stadium.
