MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Sophomore forward Jared Sam had 26 points and 12 rebounds - both career highs - as the Southern Jaguars fell short on the road against Memphis 72-67 in the Fed Ex Forum Tuesday night.
Sam, a Baton Rouge native and a member of the two-times state champion Scotlandville Hornets, went 9 of 11 from the field and was 8 for 10 from the free throw line. He added two blocks and two steals.
Sam made made one of two free throws down the stretch to bring the Jaguars within one point with under a minute left in regulation 68-67. After Sam missed the second free throw, Memphis raced down the court and scored on a (Player Name) bucket to take a three point lead with 17.2 seconds left in the game.
Adrian Rodgers scored 18 points on 6-for-18 shooting with five rebounds and Tre'lun Banks had 12 points as the Jaguars began a four-game road stretch to close non-conference play.
KJ Lawson led the Tigers (7-2) with 16 points with six rebounds and three assists off the bench. Trahson Burrell added 15 points and Ricky Tarrant, Jr and Dedric Lawson finished with 11 points each.
Southern had a chance to tie the game at 70 but Banks' attempted to draw a foul on a three-point shot that fell short of the basket.
The Jaguars will travel to Ruston to face the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs Friday night at 6:30 p.m. before catching a flight out to the West Coast to play in the Blobal Sports Classic in Las Vegas on Dec. 21 and 22.
