Southern 80, Alabama A&M 66
HOUSTON, Texas - Five players scored in double-figures, as No. 1 Southern University held off No. 9 Alabama A&M, 80-66, in the quarterfinals of the 2014 Toyota SWAC Basketball Tournament, Wednesday, inside the Toyota Center.
The win improves SU to the semifinals on Friday, March 14 at 6:00 p.m. The Lady Jaguars will face the winner of the Prairie View A&M vs. Alabama State match-up.
Adrian Sanders led SU (20-7) with 18 points, three assists, one block and a steal, shooting 8-of-14 from the field while Brittney Washington scored 17 points.
Kendra Coleman recorded 16 points with
Jasmine Jefferson registering 12 with a team-high nine rebounds.
Keonia Parrish finished with 10 points and a game-high five steals in the win.
As both teams fought to hold onto the lead in the first half, the score was tied at 37 at the break.
In the second half, AAMU (6-24) saw its only lead of the half before a jumper by SU's
Jasmine Jefferson would put the Lady Jaguars back on top and eventually increase their lead to 14.
SU outscored AAMU 17-12 in the final seven minutes to hold off the Lady Bulldogs for the win.
The Lady Jaguars shot 73 percent from the line compared to the 58 percent posted by the Lady Bulldogs, and connected on 30-of-63 shots from the field while forcing 26 AAMU turnovers.
Taylor Sippial posted 20 points to pace the Lady Bulldogs. Sippial shot 6-of-17 from the floor and went 4-for-6 from the line. Jasmine Sanders also finished in double-figures with 16 points and Ebony Johnson added 15.
