2013 JAGUAR STORYLINES

Southern was selected to finish second in the SWAC Western Division behind defending champion UAPB. It was the Jaguars highest preseason projection since 2008.

Five Jaguars were named to the preseason All-SWAC team including DB Virgil Williams who was selected at two positions (DB,KR). Joining Williams on the first team were WR Lee Doss and LB Anthony Balancier. QB Dray Joseph and Manham, La. native DE Arthur Miley were each named to the preseason All-SWAC second team.

Southern University athletics will commemorate the achievements of the 1993 Black College and SWAC champions during pregame of the Sept. 14 home opener against Prairie View A&M in A.W. Mumford Stadium. The 1993 team produced four All-SWAC first team selections including Sean Wallace, the SWAC's Defensive Player of the Year. Pete Richardson was also named the conference's coach of the year in 1993, the first of five awards the former coach received during his 17-year career at Southern.

Head Coach Dawson Odums unveiled the 2013 captains during SU Football Fan Fest on Aug. 17. FB Brian McCain, QB Dray Joseph, DB/KR Virgil Williams, LB Anthony Balancier and DE Kadeem Lewis will serve as team captain.

Southern returns to Reliant Stadium to play for the fifth time in program history. SU holds a 2-2 record in the home of the Houston Texans, posting wins over Texas Southern (07), and Prairie View A&M (04) and losses against Grambling State (05) and Prairie View (08).

NEXT WEEK: NORTHWESTERN STATE

Southern will renew a rivalry that began in 1993 when they travel to Natchitoches to face Northwestern State next Saturday.

The Southern-Northwestern State series is presently tied at 5-5-1. The series began with a 30-13 Jaguar win in New Orleans under former head coach Pete Richardson.

There are three former Demon student-athlets on the SU athletics department staff including athletics director Dr. William Broussard (Football), head men's basketball coach Roman Banks (Men's Basketball) and head women's basketball coach Sandy Pugh (Women's Basketball).
