GARLAND, Texas -- For the second consecutive year, Southern women's basketball will make an earlier-than-expected return home from the SWAC Basketball Tournament.

No. 7 seed Arkansas-Pine Bluff outrebounded No. 2 Southern 51-31 in route to a 63-58 upset of the Jaguars Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the 2013 SWAC Tournament in the Curtis Culwell Center. The Lady Golden Lion also punished the Jaguars on the interior, outscoring 32-12 in the paint.

Sophomore Jasmine Jefferson led the Jaguars (13-17) with a game high 16 points, shooting 7-for-11 from the field. Kendra Coleman added 12 points and Laneisha Stephens, who played in her final game at Southern, snagged 11 rebounds.

UAPB (13-17) had four players score in double figures, led by Asia Rhines-Malone double-double. Rhines-Malone scored 13 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. As a team, UAPB shot 40 percent from the field while connecting on 17-of-32 free throw attempts.

Southern held an early 11-9 lead 15:55 in the first half before UAPB outscored the Jaguars 22-10 to take a 31-21 lead into the half. The Lady Golden Lions led by as many as 13 with 6:53 remaining in the second half before an Adrian Sanders jumper sparked a 13-4 run that pulled the Jaguars to within four. 

But after a Jenise Gentry layup extended UAPB's lead to seven, the Lady Golden Lion shot 4-for-6 from the free throw line down the stretch to seal the win and send them to Friday's semifinal round.

For Southern, Wednesday's 5-point loss concludes its 2012-13 campaign and marks the third time Southern's season comes to a disappointing end in Garland.
