Final Stats
GARLAND, Texas - A late 10-0 run by the Panthers of Prairie View A&M, and late lack of execution spelled doom for the Southern Jaguars, as PVAM's Siarra Soliz had a game-high 21 points and Dominique Smith added 10 as No. 2 Prairie View A&M defeated No.1 Southern, 48-44 in the SWAC Women's Basketball Championship Saturday afternoon at the Special Events Center.
Prairie View A&M trailed 13-5 with 8:52 left in the first half, but a 3-pointer by Soliz spurred a 7-0 Panther run over the next 1:40. Prairie View A&M took its first lead of the game, a 15-13 advantage, at 7:19 on a pair of free-throws from Soliz.
The Lady Panthers led 27-22 at the break.
Southern outscored Prairie View A&M 22-21 in the second stanza and opened up another eight point lead with 5:13 left to play, but the Lady Panthers held the Lady Jaguars scoreless for the remainder of the game jumping out to a 12-0 run over the final five minutes.
The Jaguars had three turnovers and missed six shots down the stretch run of the game, failing to score over the last 5:13 of the contest.
The Lady Panthers improve to 21-11 with the win while Southern falls to 20-11 with the loss. Hannah Kador paced the Lady Jaguars with 12 points while Freda Allen contributed a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds. Jamie Floyd chipped in 10 points.
Southern, the SWAC regular season champion would earn the conference's automatic bid to the WNIT, but the administration has decided to decline the offer citing the financial difficulties of the athletic department at the current time.
