Ashley Augerson scored 12 points, while Jamie Floyd and Freda Allen combined for 20 points and 16 rebounds, as the Southern Jaguars cruised to a 58-39 win in the quarterfinal round of the 2011 SWAC Basketball Tournament at the Dallas Metroplex in Garland, Texas on Wednesday.
Southern held a slight 26-20 halftime lead, before breaking it open in the second half. A late 12-4 run pushed the Jags lead to 18 points with 3:56 left in the contest.
Ashley Augerson added six rebounds to go with her dozen points, while first team All-SWAC center, Jamie Floyd finished with 10 points and nine rebounds, while Defensive Player of the Year and fellow first team All-SWAC selection Freda Allen finished with 10 points and seven rebounds. Hannah Kador added eight points and six rebounds.
"I thought we did a good job of trying to make good of what we have. We had early foul trouble and we had to do things by committing. I thought Hannah was just spectacular with her basketball and decision making. I think a lot of people think she's one dimensional," says head coach Sandy Pugh. "She knows what she's doing with a basketball, she's a ball player. She's competitive, she was a leader on the floor all night saying the right things and getting the kids in a good position. Freda played hard. She makes a difference when she's on the floor. She's a hard guard, I'm really proud she didn't lose her focus. I've got great kids", added Pugh. "With their help and assistance, hopefully we can get another one on Friday."
"I've been saying all year long, my teams have never been a one man show, I think all these kids are capable of doing good things, when we put them in a position to be successful, I trust them."
Southern advances to Friday's semifinal round at 5:30pm against the winner of Thursday's Alabama A&M/Mississippi Valley State contest.
