Final Stats
Playing for the first time in two weeks, the Southern Jaguars got a career night from post player Freda Allen, to push the Jaguars to a 66-57 win in the Southwestern Athletic Conference women's basketball opener Tuesday night.
This was easily the best game played by head coach Sandy Pugh's Jaguars, as the defensive intensity was pushed to another notch, and crisp ball movement and sound shooting put Southern U. in the driver's seat early.
Allen responded Tuesday with a career-high 22 points to go with a season-high 11 rebounds, leading three players in double figures. Ashley Augerson and Jamie Floyd scored 13 apiece. Floyd along with Carneta Henderson each added four steals.
Gabrielle Rosiji led Texas Southern with 17 points, while NaDosha Strickland added 12 for the Tigers.
The Jaguars never trailed after a Floyd free throw with 13:25 remaining in the first half and stretched the lead to 29-15 by intermission. They led by double digits nearly the entire second half.
Southern capitalized on 19 points off of Texas Southern's 20 turnovers.
"This run won't be easy. We're the defending champs now," Pugh said. "I thought last year we snuck up on some people. But we want this. When we walk into the building, we want people to know we're Southern. This is what we do."
Southern will face SWAC nemesis, Prairie View A&M on Thursday at 5:30PM in the FG Clark Activity Center on the Southern campus.
