Final Stats
Jamie Floyd and Freda Allen combined for 32 points, 21 rebounds, four assists, two blocks and four steals in leading Southern to a 62-59 hard fought win over the visiting Golden Lions of Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday.
Southern U. would jump out to the early lead led by the dynamic duo of Floyd and Allen, but Arkansas-Pine Bluff was not going to go away easy. As soon as the Jags were able to establish any kind of offensive rhythm, UAPB's Jasmine Abrams and Jenise Gentry would have something to say about it. The Golden Lions duo scored 14 points apiece for UAPB.
Southern would take a 30-26 lead into halftime.
The second half was much of the same as each team would trade blows and the Jags were never able to fully pull away from the Golden Lions.
With the Southern continuing to struggle from the perimeter, the Jags pounded the Golden Lions inside and held a 50-37 rebounding edge on the afternoon. SU also took advantage of Ark-Pine Bluff turnovers, converting them into 25 points.
After falling behind 56-47 with less than four minutes remaining, UAPB would close the gap, tying the score on a short jumper by Jasmine Abrams.
Southern regained the lead when Freda Allen passed to Foster for a layup with 39 seconds left.
Allen preserved the win by stealing the ball from Gentry with 8 seconds left. Hannah Kador made one of two free throws to help seal the three-point win.
The Jaguars shot just 32 percent from the floor and 59 percent from the free-throw line, while committing 18 turnovers -- its highest total since Dec. 7, when it had 22 turnovers in a loss at Lamar.
Southern played without starter, Ashley Augerson, who is recovering from nose surgery. She is expected to miss Monday's game as well.
Jamie Floyd finished with 18 points, 11 rebounds, two blocks and one steal. Freda Allen added 14 points and 10 rebounds to go along with four assists and three steals. Hannah Kador also finished in double figured with 11 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Southern will face Mississippi Valley State Monday evening at 5:30 pm at the Mini-Dome.
