Final Stats
Southern head football coach Stump Mitchell and the Southern Jaguars football team are using their first bye week of the season to address several keys issues that plagued the Jags in their 31-7 loss to Arkansas-Monticello last Saturday.
"We have to use this week to get better as players, as a team and as a coaching staff", remarked Stump Mitchell. "We still have a pretty good team. What happened last weekend goes to show you if you don't show up ready to play d- you don't execute and you make mistakes, anyone on any given day can beat you."
The Southern team shot itself in its own foot by dropping passes, missing assignments and blocks, and for the second straight week, giving up a long special team touchdown.
UAM scored 21 first quarter points and raced out to a 24-0 halftime lead in route to a 31-7 thrashing of the Southern U. Jaguars in the home opening debut for first year head coach, Stump Mitchell.
The Boll Weevils dominated the Jags in every facet of the game and held SU to a mere 117 total yards of offense, while racking up 371 yards for themselves.
Scott Buisson led Arkansas-Monticello with 101 yards rushing on 13 carries. He also completed 9 of 15 passes for 164 yards. Polite finished with 37 yards rushing on 11 attempts. Johnny Polite rushed for two touchdowns and Jywin Ceasar scored on a 94-yard punt return to help Arkansas-Monticello in the win over The SU Jaguars.
The Boll Weevils jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter on Johnny Polite's 2-yard rushing score, Jywin Ceasar's punt return for a touchdown and a 1-yard touchdown by Nakita Myles.
After giving up no sacks in the first week of the season, the Boll Weevils sacked the Jaguars five times.
Southern U (1-1) was held to minus-22 yards rushing on 24 attempts, led by Gary Hollimon's 19 yards on the ground and his touchdown in the third quarter. The Jaguars finished with 117 yards of total offense.
Southern will regroup and focus in on the Alabama A&M Bulldogs and their September 25th matchup in Louis Crews Stadium on the AAMU campus. Gametime is set for 6:00 pm.
