The Nicholls State Lady Colonels started strong and not only took a big first-half lead, but they also held off an early second-half charge from Southern U. and finished strong in a 79-62 victory over the Jaguars Tuesday night at the F.G. Clark Activity Center.
During one five-minute stretch early in the first half, the Lady Colonels were 7-of-9 from the floor and 3-for-3 at the free-throw line, a streak that helped give them a 16-point halftime lead.
For the game, they shot 46 percent from the floor and 52 percent from 3-point range.
Just the opposite, Southern U. shot just 36 percent from the floor.
Hannah Kador had 14 points to lead the Jaguars, while Ashley Augerson added 11. Freda Allen pulled down 10 rebounds and Augerson chipped in with six.
Alisha Allen and Ricshanda Bickham scored 18 points apiece, leading four Lady Colonels in double figures. KK Babin added 13 points, four rebounds and five assists.
Southern went on a 14-5 run and crawled to within a few possessions of tying the score. With nine minutes left, Southern pulled even closer at 58-53, but Nicholls regained control, and answered with a 16-3 run, making two 3-pointers and eight consecutive free throws to take a 21-point lead.
Southern will have a 14-day break until their SWAC opener Jan. 4 against Texas Southern.
