HAWKEYES TOO MUCH FOR JAGUARS

Nov. 13, 2010

Final Stats

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -- Kelly Krei matched her career high with 20 points and Kachine Alexander added 16 as No. 22 Iowa took control early Friday to beat Southern 76-52 in the Islander Tip-Off Tournament.

Krei grabbed 10 rebounds and Alexander nine for the Hawkeyes, who held a 47-40 edge on the boards in the season opener for both teams. Jaime Printy had 16 points for Iowa.

Ebony Sellers added six points.

Southern, which won the Southwestern Athletic Conference last season and lost to Connecticut in the opening round of the NCAA tournament, led 4-3 less than 2 minutes into the game. But the Hawkeyes went on a 25-5 run over the next 11 minutes, highlighted by eight points from Alexander and six from Krei.

Iowa, picked second in the Big Ten preseason poll, had a 19-point lead at halftime and began the second half by scoring 13 consecutive points, seven by Krei. The Jaguars shot just 29.9 percent from the field.

Iowa will play the winner of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Arkansas State on Saturday in the tournament championship. Southern will face the loser of that game in Saturday's consolation game.

Neither team shot well from the outside with Southern shooting just 4 for 17 (24 percent) from beyond the arc while the Hawkeyes managed to hit 8 out of their 28 three-point attempts (29 percent).
