SOUTHERN JAGUARS SECOND HALF RALLY COMES UP TWO YARDS SHORT

Oct. 31, 2010

Final Stats

For the second time in three weeks it came down to the last 30 seconds.  And for the second time in three weeks, the Jags came up just short.

This time on the fourth and goal from the four yard line, Alcorn State's Jameson Smith stopped SU's Lee Mitchell at the two yard line to keep the Jags from the endzone, and from tying up the game in the final seconds.  Instead, Alcorn took and knee and ran out the final few seconds to secure a tough win.

Terrance Lewis rushed for 126 yards and one touchdown in Alcorn State's 27-20 win over Southern University on Saturday.

The Braves (4-4, 3-3 SWAC) took a 7-0 lead on Gabriel Nash's 17-yard run before the Jaguars' William Griswold kicked a career long 49-yard field goal to make it 7-3 a little over two minutes later.

Alcorn State then scored 20 straight points starting with Arturo Tamayo's 32-yard field goal.

The Southern offense sputtered throughout the first half, and the often talked about penalty issues reared its ugly head once again, as SU finished with 14 penalties for 140 yards.  SU is last in the FCS in penalty yards.  They would mange four punts and an interception in the first 30 minutes of the game.

Southern (2-6, 1-5 SWSAC) put up 451 yards of offense, but had two turnovers that directly lead to Alcorn State points.

The first came on an interception by Dray Joseph, which led to a 15-yard TD pass from Brandon Bridge to Jaquez Calwell. The second was a fumble, which led to a 1-yard TD run by Terrance Lewis for a 27-3 Braves' lead early in the third quarter.

The Southern defense held Alcorn scoreless the rest of the way, giving up yards but stopping the Braves with four sacks and four turnovers.

Dray Joseph had 394 yards and a touchdown on 26-for-48 passing with one interception for Southern, in his first career start.  He connected on passes to 10 different receivers on the day.

Corderious Gregory finished with seven catches for 1-6 yards, while Curry Allen had four catches for 40 yards.  Charles Hawkins had three catches five different Jags had two catches apiece, including Corey Cushing berry who also had a 54 TD reception.

The SU rushing game was stifled throughout most of the day, with Sylvester Nzekwe leading the Jags with 29 yards rushing on seven carries and a score. Gary Hollimon had 27 yards on eight carries.

Defensively, Anthony Wells led SU with 14 tackles on the afternoon. Virgil Williams had 11 tackles including two tackles for losses and one pass deflection.  Johnathan Williams made his first start and had seven tackles, two and half tackles for loss and one sack.  Marcus Doss had seven tackles, and Anthony Balancier finished with seven tackles and an interception.  Jordan Miller, Kedy Enabulele and Corey Ray each picked up a sack.  Cameron Booker also had an interception.
