BATON ROUGE, La. – Southern University broke a three game losing streak, as quarterback Jeremiah McGinty threw for two touchdowns and Southern University defeated Mississippi Valley State 38-20 on Saturday night.

McGinty had 224 yards on 14-for-24 passing, including a 62-yard touchdown throw to LaQuinton Evans to give the Jaguars (2-3, 1-2 SWAC) a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter.

After holding the Delta Devils (0-6, 0-5) to a three-and-out, Southern attempted a 45-yard field goal which was blocked and returned 65-yards by Markkus Davis to tie the score 7-7.

The Jaguars, however, scored the next 17 points to break it open.

First McGinty hit Charles Hawkins for a 2 yard pass and score, and Sylvester Nzekwe scampered down the sideline for a 39 yard second quarter score.

Evans finished with 82 yards on four catches, and Southern got additional production from its backup quarterback. Joseph Day had 106 yards and a touchdown on 5-for-7 passing. His score came on a 73-yard pass to Rashaun Allen for a 31-20 lead with 8:40 remaining in the game.

The Jaguars made big plays in the fourth quarter and won going away 38-20. The team had season highs in yards (471), points (38) and sacks (nine). The 38 points was also a season high, and three quarterbacks — starter Jeremiah McGinty and reserves Dray Joseph and Hasoni Alfred — threw touchdown passes. It was also the largest home crowd of the season -- 19,762 fans.

Offensively for SU, Gary Hollimon finished with 51 yards rushing on nine carries, while Sylvester Nzekwe finished with 49 yards on five carries and also had one touchdown. McGinty had 224 yards and two scores, while freshman Dray Joseph had 106 yards passing on five of seven passes. LaQuinton Evans led the SU receiver with four catches for 82 yards and one touchdown. Curry Allen had foiur catches for 51 yards and one score. Charles Hawkins caught his first career touchdown pass, while Rashaun Allen also reached the endzone for the second time this season.

Defensively for Southern, freshman Anthony Balancier led the Jags with seven tackles. He also had one sack, three tackles for losses, one pass deflection and one QB hurry. Senior Anthony Wells had six tackles and two pass breakups. Jordan Miller and Kedy Enabulele each had two sacks, while Corey Ray, Steven Williams, Demetrius Bentley and Delwin Williams all picked up a sack. Williams also had a forced fumble.
