Funeral services were held today for former Southern University Jaguar, Robert "Speedy" Williams, Jr. today in Winter Park, Florida who passed away at age 69 on March 8, 2009.
Williams was retired from Eastman Kodak Company and was a veteran who served as a captain in the United States Army Signal Corp during the Berlin Crisis, including stints in West Germany and during the Vietnam War.
He was inducted into the Southern University Sports Hall of Fame in 1990, and was also a member of the St. Lucy County Florida Hall of Fame for both football and baseball.
He was also a member of the Lincoln Park Academy Hall of Fame.
"Speedy" was an all-conference left fielder, and played on Southern's first NAIA baseball championship team in 1959.
He was also the first Jaguar ever to be on two championship teams in two different sports - baseball and football.
Williams was a member of the 1960 National Championship team and also earned The Pittsburgh Courier's All-American team as a halfback. He earned all-SWAC honors as sophomore, junior and as a senior.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane; two sons, two daughters and a host of other family and close friends
