HOUSTON -- Joseph Anderson caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from Arvell Nelson with 39 seconds left Saturday to give Texas Southern a 30-25 victory over Southern University.
Texas Southern (6-5, 5-2 SWAC) held Southern (6-5, 3-4) to a three-and-out to get the ball on its own 49-yard line with 55 seconds left. Nelson hit Anderson for 15 yards and Andrew Thomas for 22 before finding Anderson for the game-winner. Nelson completed 20 of 38 passes for 241 yards and two touchdowns (both to Anderson). He was also intercepted three times. Martin Gilbert had 105 yards rushing and a TD for the Tigers.
Southern had scored 9 fourth-quarter points on a Juamorris Stewart, to take a 25-23 lead.
Quarterback Juamorris Stewart had nine receptions for 86 yards and one score.
Defensively, Justin Fletcher had 13 tackles and one fumble recovery. Allan Baugh finished with 10 tackles, ½ sack, and one tackle for loss yards. Andre' Coleman had nine tackles, one sack and 2.5 tackles for loss yards. Timothy Berry finished with eight tackles and one interception, his third of the season.
