Final Stats
BATON ROUGE, LA -- Donyell Wheeler scored 21 points and Whitney Woodard added 18 points and 17 rebounds to lead the Mobile Evolution to a 77-72 win over the Southern University Lady Jaguars in an exhibition game this afternoon at the FG Clark Activity Center on the Southern campus.
Fredreika Lewis led Southern with 19 points and 13 rebounds off the bench. Indi Johnson scored 18 points and had nine rebounds, and Freda Allen added 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Southern started in good fashion going on a 8-1 run to begin the game before Mobile pulled to within one at 9-8 with 12:37 left in the first half.
Mobile took their first lead of the game at 18-17 with 8:42 remaining before the half.
The Evolution would get the three ball going led by Wheeler and Woodard who combined for 9 of 18 three's on the night.
Missed opportunities and turnovers would be SU's downfall as the Jags committed 18 on the evening.
The Mobile Evolution took an 11-point lead into the half at 37-26.
The second half began much like the first half ended with the Evolution jumping out on the Jaguars extending their lead to 17 points with 14:33 left at 51-34.
SU made a furious comeback starting with 6:00 minutes remaining after getting the lead down to 10 points. Two free throws by Indi Johnson and six straight points in the paint by Fredreika Lewis pulled the Jags to within two with 3:15 left. The Jags got to within one point on a short jumper from Lewis, making the score 67-66 with 3:02 remaining.
Joining Mobile's Wheeler and Woodard in double-figures was Tori Huggins with 15 points and Shameka Smith added 11 points and 17 rebounds.
Southern will open the season hosting Northwestern State at 6:00 pm in the FG Clark Activity Center on the SU campus.
