Southern University's JC Lewis continued his hot start to the season,
throwing for 287 yards and three touchdowns, and the Southern Dog Day Defense
shut out Valley after halftime, holding the Delta Devils to a mere 118 yards
of offense and corralling quarterback Aries Nelson, one of the Southwestern
Athletic Conference's marquee talents, in a 31-14 win Saturday night at
A.W. Mumford Stadium.
Gerard Landry had 83 yards and a touchdown on four catches. Tight end Brian
Washington had 18 yards and one touchdown on three catches. Juamorris Stewart
had 74 yards and one TD on one catch. And wide receiver Del Roberts scored on
an 18-yard reverse.
Nelson, the SWAC's preseason offensive player of the year, was 15-for-31
for 142 yards and two interceptions. Valley running back Johey Hargrett ran
for 127 yards and two touchdowns.
Johnathan Malveaux led the Jaguars defensive effort with 12 tackles (8 solo,
4 assists) and one sack. Safety Jarmaul George and defensive end, Ricky Nevers
intercepted Nelson passes. Keidrick Bailey had two of the Jags five sacks on
the night.
Southern will hit the road to Houston, Texas next week, to take on the Panthers
of Prairie View A&M at Darrell Tully Stadium at 1:00 pm.
