Norfolk, VA -- The Southern University women's basketball team wanted to make history at the NCAA Tournament. They made history but it was the wrong side of the books as they were defeated in the first round by the Duke University Blue Devils 96-27.
Southern (20-11, 14-4) was never in the game getting out-scored 40-16 on the first half and 56-11 in the second. Junior Tiffany Jones led the scorers for SU with 7 points 6 rebounds. Senior Rolanda Monroe, who was not feeling well, managed 5 points and two rebounds.
History speaking there were a number of records broken. The all-time record for lowest points scored in a NCAA women's tournament game and tied for second in fewest points in one half. With a total of 113 points scored by both teams they will rank seventh on the all-time most points by both teams lists and finished fifth in largest winning margin of 69 points, also head coach Sandy Pugh's worst defeat on "the bluff." The 11 field goals by SU placed third on the fewest field goals lists. The Jaguars shot 18% from the field to tie for second in the lowest field-goal percentage. Duke grabbed 60 rebounds to tie for eighth in the most rebounds lists. The rebounding margin of 32 placed the Jags and Blue Devils seventh on the largest rebounding margin.
A total of eight records were rewritten during the game.
"They were really athletic," said Pugh. "We didn't shoot the ball well, we didn't play defense well, we didn't rebound well, we didn't show up at all."
Southern ends the 2005-2006 season with a 20-11 overall record and a 14-4 Southwestern Athletic Conference record. Coach Pugh records her second 20th-win season at Southern and the SWAC title.
