Baton Rouge, LA -- The Southern University women's basketball team advance to their second straight Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament championship game by defeating the Lady Bulldogs of Alabama A&M University 58-55 in overtime action.
Southern (19-10, 14-4) was lead by All-American nominee Fredrieka Lewis, put up 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Purdue transfer, Indi Johnson, scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds.
The Jaguars split with ASU as they were the only team to defeat SU in Baton Rouge, LA this season 51-57. Southern then traveled to Montgomery, Alabama and defeated the Lady Hornets 69-61.
This is the Blue and Gold's thid straight tournament championship appearance. Last season they lost to Alcorn State University 56-47. During the 2004-2005 season they defeated Mississippi Valley State University 68-61.
Southern will play Alabama State University in the SWAC tournament championship game on tomorrow, March 11th at 4:30 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPNU and can be listened to on 1460 am WXOK.
