Prairie View, Texas - The Southern University women's basketball team picked up its first Southwestern Athletic Conference win. The Jaguars defeated the former WNBA All-Star Cynthia Cooper and her Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers 72-37.
"We finally played the way we know how to play," said head coach Sandy Pugh. "From day I've been stressing get the ball in the lane. When we get it in there good things happen.
Southern (3-6, 1-0) breaks their four game losing streak with the win, while coach Pugh moves one win closer to her hundredth victory "on the bluff." All-American candidate, Fredrieka Lewis dominated in the paint helping the Blue and Gold score 16 points while PV only managed 4. The Jaguars also capitalized off of turnovers scoring 13 while the Lady Panthers put up 4.
"Krystal Huggins would usually guard the most active post player but she injured her ankle last game," Pugh said. "We started Latoiya Hill and she did a good job for us. She played their post players close and contributed on offense something we know she could do especially if she had two healthy knees."
In the second half, head coach Cynthia Cooper rallied her troops to close the 15 point half-time lead to nine before the Jaguars built their lead to 35 points. Monroe continued her scoring frenzy with 10 points in the second half for a game total of 21. She also enjoyed her best shooting night of the season going 7-14 for 50% and 2-3 from the three-point line for 66%. Freshman Ashton Jones matched her career high point total with 12 points. Lewis completed the game with 8 points and 6 rebounds.
Southern will continue their Texas two-step when they travel over to Texas Southern University for a 5:30 p.m. contest on Wednesday, January 4th.
