Baton Rouge, LA -- Rolanda Monroe became the all-time leading scorer in Southern University women's basketball history as she scored 15 points to lead the Jaguars over Jackson State University 61-55. The win is their fourth straight Southwestern Athletic Conference victory.
"Rolanda is a wonderful person I wish I could adopt her as my daughter," said head coach Sandy Pugh. "It's awesome that a player I recruited would be able to come here and get a record like that. You always tell recruits that they can come to your school and do some special things but to actually see it is exciting."
Southern (7-6, 4-0 SWAC) out-scored Jackson State in the paint 36-24. They also out-scored the Lady Tigers 21-18 in points off of turnovers, 12-8 in second chance points and 25-21 in bench points. Jackson State scored the first basket of the game but the Blue and Gold took the only lead change and never looked back. Southern enjoyed the second best shooting night of the season going 24-56 for 43%. SU also shot 11-18 from the charity strife for 61%.
All-American candidate Monroe led all scores with 15 points. Sophomore Krystal Huggins and senior Latoiya Hill both pulled in 7 rebounds. Red-shirt sophomore Fredrieka Lewis scored 8 points and grabbed 6 rebounds.
The Jaguars will hit the road again as they will head to Pine Bluff, AR to face former assistant head coach Danny Evans and the Golden Lionesses of Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Evans recruited University of Purdue transfer Indi Johnson before deciding to accept the head coaching position at UAPB. The game is set for Saturday, January 14th at 5:30 p.m. on the campus of Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
