SOUTHERN SOCCER UPSETS GSU

Grambling, LA - The Southern University Lady Jaguars soccer team upset the current Southwestern Athletic Conference soccer champions the Grambling State University Lady Tigers 1-0 today.

"The young ladies executed well today," said interim head coach John Knighten. "We are putting into play what we have been working on all season control, pass, and support. We frustrated Grambling because they overlooked us and we knew if took their game to them we would be able to win."

Southern (2-8, 2-5 SWAC) played their second straight overtime game and for the second time picked up a win. Freshman Charmaine Jones kicked the wining goal this past Sunday to lead the Lady Jags to their first victory. Jones also helped in today's win as she took the foul in the penalty box to force a penalty kick for Southern. Freshman Kendall Smith took the shot and placed the ball in the left side of the goal to lead the Blue and Gold to their second straight win of the season and the first against Grambling.

"I pretended that the goalie was assistant coach Greg because I always miss my penalty kicks against him in practice," said Smith.

Goalie Ashley Stevenson also recorded her first shut out of the season totaling six saves on the day.

Even though all the games versus SWAC opponents count this year, the win secures a top three spot for Southern in the Western Division and third straight trip to the post season soccer tournament.
