Demetrius Howse enters his second year as Associate Director of Strategic Communications | Sports Information at Southern University.
He serves as the primary media relations contact for volleyball, men's basketball, softball and tennis.
Howse's sports information duties include maintaining the athletics website, updating the athletics social media pages, writing press releases, game previews, and game recaps and handling media-related obligations, such as assisting with credential requests and interviews for student-athletes, coaches and administrators. He oversees numerous game-day operations as well, namely statistics, public address announcer, live statistical feeds and photographic information for football, volleyball, women's basketball, men’s basketball, softball and tennis.
Howse spent the previous 19 months as the Coordinator of Athletic Media & Public Relations at Mississippi Valley State University which began January 2, 2020. In his position at Valley, Howse was responsible for overseeing the public relations aspect for the Delta Devils’ 15 intercollegiate sports. This included media production, maintaining statistics, updating the official website and coordinating interviews and press conferences with the media. Howse was also responsible for the upkeep of the Delta Devils social media outlets which saw a tremendous increase in followers during his time.
Also, Howse played an instrumental part in the redesign of MVSU’s athletic website along with assisting in the Covid-19 protocols and game day setup for home contests.
Preceding his time at Valley, Howse spent five years as a contractor with the Southwestern Athletic Conference, Prairie View A&M Athletics, the University of Houston Athletics, and Texas Southern Athletics. While with the SWAC, Howse has become a fixture at the annual conference championships serving as statistician along with producing social media content for the conference’s media outlets. He has traveled to numerous schools throughout the conference offering his services in different capacities for sporting events.
Prior to working with the conference, he served as Special Assistant to the Head Football Coach at Texas Southern University working directly with Head Coach Michael Haywood. He was responsible for day to day activities with the football program and the liaison between the Sports Information office and the coaching staff. He created and maintained the social media platforms for the football program while also assisting with the travel arrangements for the team.
A native of Lancaster, Texas, Howse earned his bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology from Texas Southern University in 2016.
