Robert Bailey Jr.

Robert L. Bailey, Jr. a native of Jena,La is entering his first season as the tight-ends coach at Southern A&M University. Before joining the Jaguars, Bailey spent the 2021 season at Texas Southern University, where he was an offensive consultant coach, and spent three seasons at Prairie View A&M University as the wide receivers coach.

With nine years coaching experience at the collegiate level, which includes seven years working alongside head coach Eric Dooley, Bailey has enjoyed much success in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).

In 2021, at Texas Southern, Bailey assisted with the WR's and offense and finished with two all conference wide receivers. The Tigers finished 2nd in the SWAC in total offense, avg.28 points per game and scoring 290 points on the season.  Finished in the top 25 in FCS (21) in total offense.

In the 2020 spring season the Panthers went 2-1 and WR Chris Johnson earned FCS player of the week vs Grambling State after hauling in over 100 yards and (1) touchdown.

In 2019, the Panthers ranked number four nationally in total offense while gathering top 25 ranking. In 2018 the Panthers became the first team in program history to have three 60 point scoring games in one season. The team ended the season with back-to-back 60 point games against Alabama State (66-13) and Texas Southern (60-14) most in school’s history.

The Panthers set a school record with 815 total yards offense in a win over Arkansas Pine Bluff in 2018 with a total of nine touchdowns.

With three years at Prairie View A&M University, Bailey spent the 2018-2020 season in a similar capacity. In 2019 Tristen Wallace set a career-high mark in receptions (40) while Tony Mullins ranked 10th in the league for yards (601) earning 2nd Team All-SWAC & Field of Steel honors. Also Travis O’Connor and Jared Scott both set career highs.

Bailey also helped All-American tight-end Jordan Jones who finished with (28) receptions and yards (497). earning him 1st Team All-SWAC and a free agent opportunity with the Green Bay Packers.

In 2018 Bailey helped Tristen Wallace earn 2nd Team All-SWAC honors in his debut season on the hill, as he racked up 639 yards, fourth most in the league, and four scores. 

Under Bailey's tutelage, Markcus Hardly had career highs in receptions (35), yards (524), and seven touchdowns. Jeffrey Rector and Kalen Riles also had career seasons in 2018.

Bailey also worked with the kick/punt returners finishing each season with a punt and kick-off return for a touchdown. Finishing the 2019 season #3 in the conference in punt returns. 

In the 2017 season Bailey was in the similar capacity. After finishing (5th) in the conference avg.21 points per game at Arkansas Pine bluff, Tyrin Ralph was among conference leaders in receptions per game and finished with (39) on the year.

Prior to Arkansas Pine Bluff coach Bailey spent three years at Grambling State University-his alma mater as the tight-ends coach in 2015-2016.

In 2016 the Grambling Tigers finished 11-1 and finished with a SWAC championship and Celebration Bowl Championship. aslo scoring (70) plus points twice in the 2016 season. 

After falling short in the 2015 championship game the Grambling Tigers avg.43.3 points per game. Bailey began his coaching career in 2014 as offensive graduate assistant/assistant wide receivers coach. 

As a player, he was a member of the 2011 swac championship under Coach Doug Williams. He led the team and the conference with five forced fumbles. a two year starter at receiver, he was the team’s third leading receiver in both 2012 & 2013.

Bailey followed his mother and grandmother’s  footsteps by graduating from Grambling State University where he  earned a bachelor of science  degree in business management with a minor in military science. an advocate for education, he earned a master of science in sport administration from Grambling as well. preparing to pursue a doctorate degree, Robert L. Bailey, Jr. is the proud father of four. Robert III, Karsyn, Jordyn and Skylar.
