Anthony Balancier returns to the Bluff for his first season as Southern University’s defensive backs coach, bringing championship experience, collegiate coaching knowledge and a deep connection to Jaguar Athletics.

Balancier joins the Southern coaching staff after spending three seasons at the University of Colorado (2023-25) under head coach Deion Sanders, where he served as a defensive quality control analyst and assistant cornerbacks coach.

Prior to Colorado, he spent one season at Jackson State as a defensive graduate assistant, working with the Tigers’ safeties and nickel backs.

Before making his mark on the sidelines, Balancier established himself as a standout defender in the Black and Gold. A former Southern linebacker, he earned Second-Team All-Southwestern Athletic Conference honors as a junior in 2012 before delivering a championship performance the following season.

In the 2013 SWAC Championship Game, Balancier was named Defensive MVP after helping lead the Jaguars to a thrilling 34-27 double-overtime victory over Jackson State. He turned in a dominant performance, recording 11 tackles, two pass breakups, an interception and a forced fumble to help Southern capture the SWAC championship.

Now back on the Bluff, Balancier brings his championship pedigree and coaching experience full circle as he looks to develop the next generation of Jaguar defensive backs and help continue Southern’s proud tradition of defensive excellence and championship football.
