Taj Bates returns to Southern University as a undergraduate coach, bringing high-level playing experience and a passion for development.

A native of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, Bates is a 2025 Interdisciplinary Studies major and competed for the Jaguars as a third baseman, catcher, and designated hitter.

His career includes honors such as All-SWAC First Team, All-Louisiana Team, HBCU All-American, and Swingman Classic attendee, along with experience as a professional baseball player and two-time MLB All-Star.

Bates has coached at the youth level with the All Ripken Futures Games (9U & 10U) and holds MLB Coaching and Development Program certification. He lives by the mindset to “give your all at all times” and is excited to return home and pour into the next generation of Jaguars.
